Son of Alexander Stuart (sometimes written as Stewart) Wallace, a South Carolina Congressman, and Nancy Lee Ratchford Wallace, he entered the USMA on 1 Sept 1868. Graduated as 9th (of 57) in the Class of 1872. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 7th US Cavalry on 14 June 1872. Joined Company G during the 1873 Yellowstone expedition. Commanded troop of Indian Scouts during the 1874 Black Hills expedition. Stationed in New Orleans, LA, on detached duty from 1874 to 1876, when he returned to Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory, to participate in the 1876 Sioux Expedition. Appointed 1st Lt and Regimental Adjutant on 25 June 1876. During Battle of Little Big Horn, he was in Major Reno's Battalion, and survived the battle. Participated in 1877 Nez Perce campaign, 1878 Northern Cheyene Campaign, and testified at Reno Court of Inquiry in 1879. At the Cavalry School, Fort Leavenworth KS in 1880. Commanded Company K at Fort Leavenworth. Married Caroline "Carrie" Otis on 11 Oct 1882 in St. Paul, MN. One son, Otis Alexander, born 12 Sept 1889. Appointed Captain, Company L, on 23 Sept 1885, and took command of Company K in Sept 1890. Killed at age 41 while commanding Company K in the fight against Big Foot's Sioux band at Wounded Knee, SD. Cause of death: gunshot wounds to head and abdomen. Buried 6 Jan 1891 at Yorkville (now the city of York), SC. His widow, Carrie, died 9 April 1942 in Bronxville, NY.
