Mabel O. Stephens McClure
Mabel O. Stephens McClure died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1991, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. She was 84 years of age.
Born Dec. 10, 1906, at Cedar Vale, Kan., she was the daughter of Clarence and Laura Nelson. She received her education in Cedar Vale.
On July 21, 1926, she married Ray E. Stephens at Cedar Vale and they made their home in Grainola, Okla. for a number of years before moving to Ponca City in 1942. Mr. Stephens preceded her in death on April 23, 1959. In 1965 she married John R. McClure and he receded her in death on Jan. 20, 1972.
During her lifetime, Mrs. McClure worked at Cessna in Ponca City and Wichita as one of the "Rosie the Riveter" workers of World War II fame. She also worked for the Department of Public Welfare in Fairview and Newkirk and held an administrative appointment at the Chilocco Indian School. She took early retirement to pursue her hobbies of fishing, traveling, ceramics and club work. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Jackie Cullum and Evelyn Hoddy, both of Ponca City and Joanna Noyes of Gadsden, Ala." One son, Donald Stephens of Newkirk: nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and on granddaughter.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, at the Newkirk Cemetery with Rev. Evans T. Moseley officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home until 12 noon on Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. McClure's name to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Diabetes Research, 825 Northeast Thirteenth, Oklahoma City, OK 73104.
The family will be at 1725 Clarke Street.
