MRS. P.N. LAIRD
PLEASANT HILL -- Death Sunday claimed Mrs. P. N. (Henrietta) Laird, daughter of plains-crossing parents and a builder of this community.

Mrs. Laird was 81 and had been ill for a short time. She was born Jan. 17, 1871 in Canyonville, Oregon, to Sara and Samuel Handsaker, who crossed the plains in 1851 and settled in Dexter, Oregon. Sam Handsaker was credited with naming the town of Dexter. Mrs. Laird was the youngest daughter. Only one son, John, of Portland, now survives the large family.

RELIGIOUS WORKER
Mrs. Laird for many years carried on the family's religious tradition by working with the Pleasant Hill Christian Church. To the community she exemplified the pioneer woman who worked hard and cared well for her family and home.

She married Pomeroy N. Laird in Pleasant Hill on May 17, 1891. To the union were born six children, three sons and three daughters. Mr. Laird died in the fall of 1944.

All of her children were with Mrs. Laird during her final illness: Mrs. G. E. Galligan, Pullman, Wash.; Mrs. W. A. Hopp, Soap Lake, Wash.; Mrs. Werwin Lange, Jennings Lodge; Ralph P., Redmond; Wayne T., Colville, Wash.; and Lawrence of Pleasant Hill, with whom she had made her home in late years. Thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive as well as her brother, John.

SERVICES WEDNESDAY
Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2 p.m. at Bartholomew-Buell Chapel in Springfield. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Pioneer Cemetery.

In accordance with Mrs. Laird's wishes, the Rev. Claude O'Brien will offer prayers and Rev. Willis White will conduct final services. Her grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
