William C. Basilone, 81, of Huron, died Thursday, September 2, 2010 at Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky.

Bill was born January 16, 1929 in Lorain, Ohio. After his mother died in 1936 he spent the next 8 years at Lorain County Children's Home, Oberlin, OH. He then came to Huron where he attended high school while he lived with the Wechter family and worked at the Huron Dairy.

Mr. Basilone graduated from Huron High School in 1948 and then enlisted into the USAF. He married Patricia Altman of Huron in 1949. Bill served 30 proud years active duty and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1978 and was the Base Sgt. Major at K.I Sawyer Air Force Base, Michigan. His overseas assignments included tours in the Philippines, England, Vietnam, and Germany. For the next 14 years Bill was the office manager at Sandusky Crushed Stone and retired in 1992 for a second time.

He is a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Huron; the Air Force Sergeants Association; lifetime member of the VFW of Sandusky, American Legion, Sandusky, Knights of Columbus, Huron; Huron High School Alumni Assoc., past president of St. Peter Parish Council, and a member of the Huron Township Appeals Board for 18 years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia (Altman); five daughters, Linda Basilone of Grove City, OH, Colonel Mary Jane, USAFR (Ret.) (Colonel Gary, USAF (Ret.)) Grabulis of Lorton, VA, Major Diane Basilone of East Greenwich, RI, Karen (USAF Colonel Clayton) Goya of Norway, and Janet (John) Welsh of Sandusky; a son, Lt. Commander Garry, USN (ret) (Cat) Basilone of Huntsville, AL; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Lula (Patrick) Basilone; three sisters, Josephine, Geraldine, and Delores; and four brothers, John, Frank, Eugene, and Edward.

Friends may call Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Foster Funeral Home, 410 Main Street, Huron, OH. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, 430 Main Street, Huron, with Rev. Jeffery Sikorski officiating.

Entombment will be at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron, with Military Honors
