On November 9, 1910, she married Horace Gates Torbert at Bethesda, Maryland.

Alice C. Torbert was born in the District of Columbia, the daughter of United States Attorney Randolph Coyle. In 1881 he prosecuted Charles Guiteau who assassinated President James A. Garfield. She graduated from Western High School and was the first woman from the District of Columbia to attend Radcliffe College. After her graduation in 1901 she was employed by the Smithsonian Institution for nine years. She then married Horace G. Torbert Sr. who died in 1940. He was a transportation executive. After her marriage, she taught in the Americanization schools for foreign born residents. During World War I she produced plays for the War Camp Community Service. In 1930 she wrote Vergil, a Festival Play, which was produced in the District schools. In 1950 a District chapter of the Colonial Dames of America published her book, Eleanor Calvert and Her Circle. In the 1920s she wrote the book, Guide to Old Georgetown which was still being published at the time of her death. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, leading its poetry groups until a few months ago. She died at age 91 on Sunday, September 8, 1969 at her home at the Roosevelt Hotel at 2101 16th Street Northwest. Survivors included her son, Horace G. Torbert Jr. and two grandsons. Her son was a former ambassador to the Somali Republic, who was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Affairs. A memorial service was held at Christ Episcopal Church at 31st and O Streets Northwest. Interment was private. The family requested memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to the Radcliffe Club of Washington, D.C. Scholarship Trust, Radcliffe College at Cambridge, Massachusetts.
