Jesse was the 2nd child born to Silas S Barnett and Mattie Brown Barnett, his second wife.
Mattie, a widow, came to this marriage with a son, Clarence, from her 1st marriage to Jacob Lawrence Leslie.
Si's first wife, Cora Roper Barnett, bore him 2 children before her death: Thomas Oliver and Alma, who Si brought to his marriage with Mattie Brown.
Jesse said they were all one family and he never knew the term 'step brother or sister'.
He always had a special love for his mother, Mattie.
Jesse's given name was 'Jesse B' without a true middle name. When applying for social security, he was repeatedly asked 'what the B stood for' so that he finally just gave them the name Buford out of frustration...it was then recorded as his 'official' middle name.
As a youngster when asked his name he would say 'Mano' meaning he was a 'man' & that nickname followed him into later life, among his relatives.
Jesse was hired by UPRR & learned the vocation of a chef, he was a great one, a natural & enjoyed preparing food for his family. He always BBQ'd in his backyard, from steaks to lamb chops to hamburgers. But I have to say from experience that his recipe for prime rib of beef was OUTSTANDING!
Jesse visited Texas often as a young man and became acquainted with the Lacy family in Wiley area.
When he met Millie, the 3rd youngest daughter of John & Ruth, he was love-struck. When he called her from Calif early in 1939, he proposed to her. She replied by purchasing a ticket to meet him in Los Angeles. They were married on Valentine's Day of 1939.
They had 2 sons, Michael Leslie and Thomas Raymond.
Jesse preceded Millie in death by 23 yrs. In their early married years they resided in Los Angeles, CA but most of their married life was spent in La Habra, CA where they raised their boys.
Jesse was a chef with UPRR for over 40 of those years.
