John J. Hastings was born at Fort Totten Military Fort in Benson co., ND on 10 Aug 1892. His father, Howard Warren Hastings was the teacher of Harness making and also the Music Director and teacher at the Fort. Howard taught John a love of music very early; at the age of 5 he performed in a recital at the Fort on his violin. He appeared with his father's all-Indian marching band at major performances at the turn of the century; several wild west shows, The Chicago Worlds' Fair, The St. Louis Fair and once in Washington, DC and for the President. Throughout his life he had many bands playing for dances; first in North Dakota and Minnesota then in Los Angeles.

John attended University of North Dakota and went on to the University of North Dakota School of Law. John loved cars from the beginning. When John was a young man, still in his teens, he became involved in the beginning of a group formed to help the farmers; the Non-Partisan League. He was the Financial Director. He was described by many as a Financial Genius. There were powerful opposing forces that had been making money illegally off of the struggling farmers, cheating them out of their profit and eventually their land. These opposing forces came against the Non-Partisan League causing serious consequences to the men involved; eventually brutally crushing them at their core being.

10th Oct 1914 in Fargo, ND., John married Jeanne MacDonald, a Scottish immigrant girl and they had 2 children; John F. Hastings and Helene Jeanne Hastings. When the children were very small, John packed up his wife and children and moved west to Oregon where he took up the occupation of gold mining. He had an office in the Spaulding bldg in Portland, OR when he owned the Almeda Mining co. located in Douglas County, OR. Then, after selling it, he went to Cle Elum, WA where he owned the Mowhawk mining co. He built a log cabin and spent both winters and summers there. The weather was severe but John kept busy cutting, carrying and burning wood, keeping himself warm. In the winter, he sold firewood until his health failed him and he could no longer spend winters there.

In his final years, John was confined to the Western States Hospial, Ft Steilacoom, WA where he passed away on the 28th of June 1957. He was cremated and his ashes are at the Lincoln Memorial Crematorium in Portland, OR.
