Prominent Sculptor Dies At 62

Maurice Brooks, 62, 1738-8th East, prize - winning sculptor, died Dec. 1, 1970, in a Salt Lake nursing home of a heart ailment.
Brooks was a graduate of both East High School and the University of Utah. He served his apprenticeship in 1923 with Phil Malin on the Sugar House Monument.
As a self - employed sculptor, Brooks collaborated on the sculpturing of an Angel Moroni statute which was displayed in Los Angeles, Switzerland and London.
Every piece of his work has received a prize of some kind, including a first - place gold medal he received at the Utah State Fair Art Competition. Brooks works have been purchased by the Utah State Institute of Fine Arts, the University of Utah, Shriner's Hospital, and numerous out - of - state organizations.
Brooks was a member of the Catholic Church.
He was born Jan. 23, 1908, Edgemont, Nev., the son of Clifton and Margaret McGarry Brooks. He married Faye Hansen on Sept. 18, 1937, in Salt Lake City.
His survivors include his widow; one son and two daughters, James Edmund, St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Sydney (Marueen) (?sic) Roberts, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Lawrence (Frances) Amott, Kamas; and seven grandchildren.
Requiem Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Madeline, 331 E. South Temple. Holy Rosary will be recited Thursday at 7:30 p.m., 372 E. 1st South, where friends may call Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and Friday before services. Burial will be in the Lake Hills Memorial Cemetery.
