Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served during the Civil war first as Colonel and commander of the 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry, then as Acting Assisstant Inspector General on the staff of Brig. General Charles Griffin. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 15, 1865 for "attention to duty and discipline". After the war he served as Michigan's Quartermaster General from 1870 to 1875.
