Lieut. E.R. Long graduated from Rush Medical College at Chicago and planed to resign his commission. In a post-mortem examination he cut his finger resulting in an infection from which he died. Lieut. I.R.D. Burnett who cared for him caught the infection and died a week later. Both are buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
Age 36 years.
He was the son of John Long and Sabra Ramsay Long.
He was married to Phebe Ann Fitch.
They were the parents of four children including Caroline Sabra Long and John Osmond Long, USMA Class of 1854, Cullum No. 1661 (born October 30, 1832 and died April 3, 1875) in Tampa, Florida.
After his death Phebe Fitch Long married William Lovering Jr.
