Chief Musician Dilena was a 20 year veteran of the United States Navy. He first joined the Navy in February of 1917. He was both a World War I and a World War II veteran. He saw sea duty on the USS Southery, USS Holland, USS Melville, USS Rigel, USS California, USS Langley, USS Maryland (aboard during the Pearl Harbor Attack), USS New Mexico, USS Aoostook, USS Nitro and the USS Omaha. He saw shore duty at USNTS San Francisco, USNTS San Diego, and Mare Island Naval Shipyard (where he was promoted to Bandmaster). He was awarded the World War I Victory medal, the Navy Good Conduct medal with 1934 reenlistment bar, the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, the American Theater Campaign medal, and the American Defense Service medal.
