Daughter of San Diego newspaper publisher Abraham Raymond Sauer (1851-1933) and his wife, Alice Marion van Aernam (1858-1946), Clara came with her parents, brother and sister to San Diego at the age of nine. She was educated in Omaha and San Diego. On June 15, 1912 in Los Angeles, CA she married James Albert "Bert" Laflin, originally of San Francisco, CA. Bert was the son of James "Jimmy" Laflin, original proprietor of the Old Ship Saloon in San Francisco. A former Marine and employee of her father's newspaper, Bert was also a leader of the Industrial Workers of the World Union in San Diego and was an organizer of the Magonista Uprising, which attempted to create an independent state of the Baja Peninsula during the Mexican Revolution. Bert and Clara were the parents of one daughter; they divorced about 1916. On April 30, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA, Clara married Lt. Cdr. John Jacob "Jack" Haas, USN, a naval dentist. They resided together in San Diego, CA, Pensacola, FL, Manila (Philippines), and Shanghai (China), where they went for Jack's naval duties. Widowed in 1937, Clara resided afterward in San Diego for some time (for several years she lived together with her daughter, who was widowed in 1938). Later she relocated to Berkeley, where she lived with her sister, Georgia Sauer Harvey (1884-1979), until her death. She was laid to rest at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery on January 20, 1962 beside her husband and son-in-law, Lt. James Albert Murphy, USN. Her gravestone reflects an incorrect date for her birth, reading 1895. The year 1888 is the correct date.
