Born in Bethany, Missouri.

The First Regiment was fully mustered in, at Lincoln, Nebraska, on May 9, 1898. The regiment was ordered to San Francisco, California, and arrived there May 20, 1898. It embarked for Manila, Philippine Islands, June 15, 1898, on the steamship "Senator" and dropped anchor in Manila bay on July 17th. It participated in the attack on Manila August 13th, 1898, and, following a quick end to hostilities with Spain, went into camp at Santa Mesa, north of Manila, on December 5, 1898. It remained on guard and outpost duty there, following the December 10th peace agreement with Spain. It continued this service until the Philippine War of Independence (1899–1902)]; which broke out on February 4, 1899, in Manila.
