The History of Northern Wisconsin, Vol II. Chicago: Western Historical Pub. Co, 1881, p 534: "CHARLES WERBKE, Merchant tailor, Manitowoc. He was born in Prussia Nov. 11, 1827. He emigrated to America in 1854, and settled in Manitowoc City, and began business as above noted. He enlisted in 1861 in Company B, 9th Reg., Wis. V. I. Served three years and two months, and was mustered out in Milwaukee. He then came to Manitowoc and began his present business. He was married in Manitowoc, in 1865, to Mrs. Minna Kullmann. She was born in Saxony, Germany, Aug. 11, 1836. They have two children."

Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, June 30, 1917, Page 7: "BODY OF LATE CARL WERBKE TO BE BURIED HERE Pioneer Tailor of City, Who Died at Wauwatosa Yesterday, Was Civil War Vet, Body Here Monday Afternoon Charles Werbke, pioneer resident of this city who died at Wauwatosa yesterday, will be buried in this city, messages last night announcing that the body would be brought here Monday afternoon at 3:00 and taken from the station to Evergreen for interment. The death of Mr. Werbke removes one of the oldest pioneers of the county, he being nearly 90? years of age and a resident here for sixty years. For many years he was engaged in business as a tailor, conducting a shop on Franklin street. He was a veteran of the Civil war, having served throughout the war as a member of Company B, Ninth Wisconsin infantry, having enlisted in 1861 and being mustered out in 1865. Mr. Werbke was born at Soldier/Soldler? , province of Brandenburg, Germany, Nov. 11, 1827. Mr. Werbke was married here April 25, 1865 to Minna Kuhlman, who preceded him in death two years ago. He is survived by one son, Norbert at Oshkosh and one daughter, Mrs. Theo. Landmann, of Wauwatosa with whom he had made his home of recent years. Mr. Werbke was a member of Walker Post, G.A.R. and of Manitowoc lodge 194 I.O.O.F."
