Donald McKinnon, my Granduncle, was born in Randolph, Utah, on 26 October 1879, as the 10th son of Archibald McKinnon, Sr. (1837-1915) and his first wife, Mary McKay McKinnon (1838-1925). Donald McKinnon's obituary, says he was suvived by his wife, Dorothy Wilson McKinnon, and an adopted son, named Roy McKinnon. Many hours of research has led to my finding proof that their adopted son, Roy McKinnon, was, in fact, Roy Smith McKinnon.

Roy Smith McKinnon was born in Scranton, Iowa, on June 15, 1915, but as yet, I do not know his original parents' names. Roy's older sister has informed me that he had only one biological sibling, a sister named Helen. This is no doubt the sister, called Helen Anderson, with whom Roy spent the holiday season in Hyrum, Utah, in December of 1937. Roy's older sister says Helen was in fact also adopted, and that she twice met Helen and her family.

The articles I've found of Roy McKinnon's youth in Randolph, Utah, show that he was a Boy Scout, played the clarinet, sang very well, and danced well enough to win a dancing contest. He was quite talented and sociable, and was helpful and considerate. He attended BYU, and his skilled tenor voice earned him a spot in the chorus of "The Sun Dance" Opera.

He went on an LDS mission to The Northwestern States Mission, which included Montana, Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. At one point he had to return home for an appendectomy, but, after some convalescance time (including a visit to his sister for the holidays), he returned to complete his mission in Tacoma.

On 21 June 1940, Roy Smith McKinnon married Venda Lee Sweet (1919-1955), of Wellington, Utah, in Tacoma, Washington. They were sealed to each other in the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 25 May 1942.

Roy and Venda had 4 biological children, and then adopted a daughter. Their first child, a son, was Marlynn Donald McKinnon (1941-1968). Their second child, a daughter, was born a couple of years later and is yet living. A couple years later their third child, a daughter named Janice, was born; however, two-days later she died in her hospital crib. Their fourth child, another son, is still living. Their adopted daughter is also still living.

Venda died 1 August 1955, and was buried next to her husband, Roy, in the Mountain View Cemetery in Lakewood, Washington, a little south of Tacoma.

About 7-months after his first wife died, Roy married Edith Hanson, also of Wellington, Utah, on 8 February 1956. Roy and Edith were married in Salt Lake City, and sealed to each other in the Salt Lake Temple on 31 January 1961.

Edith had been married before, which ended in divorce. Apparently she and her son, Mark, moved in with Roy and Venda after her divorce. Shortly after Roy married Edith, he adopted her son Mark, who took the name Mark McKinnon.

Eventually Roy and Edith had a son together, but his name will not be mentioned at this time.

Roy's living son provided this information: "My father, Roy S. McKinnon, is buried in Mountain View Memorial Park in Lakewood, Wa. Mark McKinnon was Edith's son and his ashes are interned [sic] right on top of my second mother "Edith's" grave, next to my Dad's grave. My first Mother, Venda, is buried on the right side of my Dad."

Venda's grave marker is to the left as seen in the family plot picture at the right, because she was buried at Roy's right.
