Funeral Services for Mr. Artis Cordell Britton, 88, of Longbranch, Texas will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Hawthorn Funeral Home with Rev. Buddy Briggs officiating. Burial will follow in County Line Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from 6–8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Britton died Monday, September 6, 2010 in Carthage, Texas.

Mr. Artis Cordell Britton was born December 27, 1921 in Texas to the marriage of John Offie and Vinnie Fallwell Britton. Mr. Britton married Quida Faye Davis February 21, 1942 and celebrated 58 years together before she preceded him in death April 1, 2000. Cordell later served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star metal for gallantry in action in Germany on February 28, 1945 by destroying the enemy gun crew with a hand grenade. Sgt. Britton's devotion and duty enabled his squad to resume its advance and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service

After the war, Cordell worked for Trail-Mo-Bill for 27 years and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He always had a smile on his face for everyone. Mr. Britton was a long time member of the County Line Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers, Realous Britton, Leander Cleveland Britton, Elvin Turner Britton and Leonard Britton; sisters, Zeravell Keith, Beatrice Atkerson and Eloise Nix. Mr. Britton is survived by his son, Lindy Cordell Britton and wife Linda of Longbranch; daughter, Betty Lou Britton Atkerson and husband Roger of Longbranch; grandchildren, Brandi Lynne Britton Reed, Kimberly Ann Atkerson Brady, Timothy Lynn Atkerson, Mark Allen Atkerson; great grandchildren, Baylor Joe Reed, Baylee Kay Reed, Scott Thomas Brady, Amber Christine Atkerson, Madeline Ann Atkerson; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Serving as pallbearers are Pat Jones, Jerry Davis, Dean Jones, Troy Davis, Bobby Reed and Joe Dean Britton. Honorary pallbearer is O.J. Britton. The Family requests that memorials may be made to Clayton Fire Department. Online condolences may be signed at www.hawthornfuneralhome.com
