A Christian in faith. He submitted his imperfections to the mercy of his Redeemer. Identified with the Southern people in interest and destiny, he illustrated the honor, enterprise and patriotism of this country by services and sacrifices in her defence. In the public Councils he was fearless and Conservative. Superior to the obligations of party, he commanded the confidence of the people. In the Departments of Enterprise, as a Merchant and a Planter, he was energetic, conscientious, successful. In all the relations of social and private life, he was irreproachable. His bereaved family have erected this Tomb to his memory. His friends, unite with them in honoring his virtues and deploring his loss.
