Stanley married Nancy Beardsley, daughter of Whitmore and Dolly (Beard) Beardsley when he was age 22 before the 1820 census.
Rev. Marshall Sherman, Stanley's brother, migrated to western Dundee Township, Kane, Illinois, in 1837. Stanley and his family followed in 1844.
In February of 1845 he bought one acre of land with twenty one other people as a "burying ground" in Section 19, Dundee Township. He bought his first acreage in Section 19 from Hiram Roys on 24 October 1845. This 40 acre site would be his primary homestead until he died.
Stanley and Nancy Sherman had seven children:
Aura Salina, Horatio N., Sidney who died young, Julius R., Emeline, Dolly and Sidney.
