Russell lived all of his life in the Ticonic and Rodney area. He attended country school at Ticonic and graduated from Mapleton High School with the Class of 1942. Following graduation, he was a heavy equipment operator during the summer months and worked at the packing house in Sioux City during the winter. On April 2, 1946, Russell was drafted into the United States Army and served during WWII until being honorably discharged on October 2, 1947. He returned to the Ticonic area and later farmed near Rodney until retiring.
Russell enjoyed watching Westerns and reading Western books. He especially loved kids and spending time with his nieces and nephews.
Russell is survived by his siblings: Darleen (Joe) Williams of Auburn, CA, Eva Schumacher of Mapleton, IA, Harold (Gladys) Castle of Springfield, SD, Leslie (Janice) Castle of Mapleton, IA, James Castle of Smithland, IA, and Gary (Betty) Castle of Mapleton, IA; a sister-in-law, Jean Castle of Smithland, IA; and a host of nieces; nephews; other relatives and special friends.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ada Habinck and three brothers: George Castle, Floyd Castle and Arthur Castle.
