NEWPORT NEWS - Harry Eugene Atkinson, 81, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, in Newport News. A lifelong resident of Newport News, he was a retired Major U.S. Marine Corps, former Mayor and city councilman for Newport News and an attorney in Newport News. He retired as an attorney in 1999. His offices and memberships include Elder, Presbyterian Church U.S.; past President Denbigh-Stanley Civic League; past President, Newport News Federation of Civic Organizations; Past Chairman, Newport News Democratic Executive Committee; a member of Warwick Moose Lodge No. 1711; FBI National Academy Associates; Life Member International Association of Chiefs of Police; Life Member American Legion, Post 368 (Post Judge Advocate for past 18 years); Life Member VFW Post 176; Trustee, Warwick Lodge No. 336, A.F. & A.M.; Newport News Elks Lodge No. 315. In addition, he was a graduate of FBI National Academy, 61st Session; a member of the Newport News City Council from 1962-1966 and 1974-1978; Mayor from 1974-1976; an instructor in law, Marshall-Wythe Law School; Legion of Honor; Order of DeMolay; and a member of the senior board of directors, First Virginia Bank of Tidewater. Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lucille Atkinson, he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kay Atkinson; son, Harry E. Atkinson Jr. and his wife, Karyn, of Newport News; daughter, Karen A. Loffredo and her husband, Michael, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Catherine, Michael and Joseph Loffredo of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and sister, Peggy Crotty of Newport News. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, at Denbigh Presbyterian Church by the Rev. John Sadler with burial in Quantico Veterans National Cemetery. Mr. Atkinson will lie in state from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, July 2, at the Newport News City Council Chambers. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Denbigh Presbyterian Church, Parkinson's National Foundation or the charity of your choice. Riverside Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
