My grandfather was born in New Madrid, MO. and was raised in Sikeston, MO. Grandpa had a hard life. He was the oldest of out of 8 kids. When grandpa was in the 6th grade his father left the family for several years and went to Oklahoma. Grandpa had to quit school to get a job and support the family. He also worked long tirelessly hours on their farm every day.
When his father returned to the family he was somewhat resentful of my grandfather. My grandfather had to step up and be the man of the house. I think there was some jealousy because of the great job my grandfather did for the family. My grandfather had became very close to his mother and brother and sisters during that time. He worked very hard out in the fields on the farm. In Missouri with the heavy humidity during the summers, that was not easy.
Grandpa was the sole provider for the family for several years until the other boys could help out. He made sure his brothers and sisters attended school and that they all had good clean clothes to wear. When his father returned, their original family name was spelled Lassiter, but he changed the family name to Laster. It was believed because my great grandfather had gotten into some trouble down in Oklahoma.
When grandpa was 20 yrs old he married my beautiful grandma, Flossie Jane Howard on January 16, 1932 in Sikeston, Missouri. He continued to farm and then went to work at the Lime Kiln in Ste. Genevieve, MO. Grandma and grandpa had 7 children. Four were born in Ste. Genevieve. My grandfather moved up quickly in the company and became a union man. He was very active in the company and with the union. In 1947 he was offered a job in Washington State to start the Union Safety Committee at the Kaiser Aluminum Co. Plant in Tacoma. The family lived there until they moved to California in 1953.
Grandpa was retired from the World Wide Building Maintenance Company when he passed away. He was the Operations Manager. When he retired, the owner of the company was so impressed with my grandfather's work ethics and what he did to help the company succeed and grow that he kept my grandfather on the payroll after he retired. My grandfather died from a heart attack when he was 70 yrs old.
