Kate McCreary was the daughter of Thomas Hughes and Julia Ann Smith of Fayette County, KY.

She was married on 12 Jun 1867 to James B McCreary. They lived most of their married life in Richmond, KY.

Their only child was Robert Hughes McCreary (1868-1932) who wed Jessica Cornelia Newberry in 1892 and lived in Chicago. They had two children Robert Newberry (1893-1986) who wed Katherine Louis Pierce and live in IL and Harriet Newberry w/o James Gatewood Gay of Lexington.

Kate served as First Lady of Kentucky for her husband's first term as Governor in 1875-1879, but died before he was reelected for a second non-consecutive term in 1911. Their grandaughter Harriet Newberry McCreay served as First Lady for that term, starting when she was only 16.
