Carl "Charley" Gerads was born October 25, 1829 in North Rhein - Westphalia, Germany. It was there that he married Katherine Klinkenberg.

Carl Gerads, his wife Catharina (Klinkenberg) Gerads and 3 children (Wilhelm Johann, Katharina Anna, and Carl Joseph) arrived in New York harbor on the ship 'Favorita' August 13, 1864.

Nine children were born to this union:

- William (14Oct 1856–1913)
- Katherine Schoenberg (21May 1858-30Oct 1935)
- Charles "Carl" (04Nov 1862-1943)
- Heinrich (30Jul 1865-1932)
- Martin (10May 1868-1914)
- Mary Cremers (24Apr 1870-1942)
- Joseph (05May 1872-15Nov1900)
- John (13Sep 1874-1954)
- Caroline Rakotz (24Nov 1876-1957)

The first three children, William, Katherine "Katie", and Charles "Carl", were born in Stotternich, NorthRhein - Westphalia, (former Prussia) Germany.

In 1863, soon after the birth of their son Carl, the five members of the Gerads family immigrated to the United States. The first three years in America the family lived in Shakopee, Scott County, Minnesota.

Katherine Gerads gave birth to their 4th child – Heinrich "Henry" Gerads on July 30, 1865 in Scott County, Minnesota.

The next year, in 1866, Katherine & Carl packed up their belongings, their four children and started their journey northwest to Stearns County, Minn. - approximately 100 miles from Shokopee to Krain Township - located in the north-central area of Stearns County.

The nearest village was located in the south western part of Krain township. The little hamlet startled over Sections 29 & 32 of Krain Township and in the 1896 Stearns County Platt Map. The village was originally called Gates P.O. (Post Office).

A few years later, the name of the village (Gates P.O.) was changed to St. Anthony, Stearns County, Minn. The members of the Gerads family were some of the first settlers in the area and homesteaded a farm in Sections 16 & 17 of Krain Township.

Carl Gerads died in 1893 at the age of 64 years in St. Anthony, Stearns County, MN. He was survived by his wife, Katherine (Klinkenberg) Gerads, and his 9 children.

Upon his death, the German newspaper in St. Cloud, "Der Nordstern", published a long & respectful obituary of Carl Gerads. He was the agent of "Der Nordstern" for many years and the obituary reflects the newspaper staff's gratitude. The translations of page 3 of the March 2, 1893 issue of "Der Nordstern" is as follows:

NOTE: obituaries during this period were written similar to a "Local" or news piece, not like the obituaries of today.

From Krain, the following news has been sent to us: On the 23 of Feb there passed away, well provided by the consolations of the Catholic church in his 64th year, one of the foremost settlers of the town of Krain, namely the prominent in the county regarded and, by all who knew him highly respected Mr. Carl Gerads, who served for many years is an agent for Der Nordstern.

The deceased was on of the highest esteemed citizens of the town of Krain, who for a number of years, it might be said, he served as a leader, as he was also a member of the directors of the parish and always had the interest of the congregation at heart, in civil as well as religious affairs. The deceased was to be found at the fore-front, and whenever it was needed, his helping hand was ever at the ready provided by noble concern for his neighbors, and never by selfishness or self-service.

In the departed Carl Gerads the family loses a precious head of the town Krain one of its outstanding fellow citizens, and the parish one of its best members whereby the sorrow of his lose is not confined to the family, but spread thought the entire St. Anthony community and the entire town of Krain.

That the pain of his loss is truly universal shown clearly on the day on which his body was deposited in the cool bosom of the earth on Saturday with the attendance of all the members of the parish, and friends from near and far. He was put to his final rest at which occasion the pastor of the parish, the Rev Ign. Lager, delivered a spirited eulogy after the funeral Mass, during not a single eye remained dry in the congregation. He drew an outline of the earthly span of the deceased brother as he in worldly as well as spiritual matters so often in word and deed, demonstrated his genuine Christ-like lifestyle. And at the end, on his way to eternity, through the reception of the duty, he guaranteed himself a happy hour of death.

After this eulogy, among those from Albany, Holding, Freeport as well as his loved, a crowd such as had never been seen in Krain. He was deposited in the cool grave amid the prayers for the repose of the soul of the deceased being sent up to heaven that he have a gracious judge. Surely these wishes will be heard because the life of the departed had been such that death was not to be dreaded.

At the grave was the deeply grieving wife, along with 8 mostly adult children. To them Der Nordstern extends its deepest condolences and our wish for eternal peace for the departed.
