Eric Peter Malberg-born Dec. 16th, 1851 Sweden (birth date from American records). That's all we knew up until July of this year.
In the 1895 MN state census and the 1900 MN federal census, Eric and family are living at Nordland Township, Aitkin CO, MN (near the town of Glory). In the 1910 census he is living with his daughter, Maggie and husband, John Anderson, at Everett (Cedarhome), Snohomish Co, WA with his wife Bessie and daughter, Bessie. The 1920 federal census has the Malberg family and the Anderson Families living in Ferry County, Curlew dist. of Washington State. The 1930 census of Curlew, Ferry Co, WA, list Eric as head of the household, with his son-in-law John Anderson and two of his children, Chester and Ruby, all living together. Eric lost his wife (Bessie) and John also lost his wife (Eric's daughter Maggie) in the 1920's.
Eric died on Aug 27th, 1933, Republic, Ferry CO, WA at a county home (nursing home). On his death certificate, he's listed as E. P. Melberg (not Malberg). Eric Melberg is buried at the Republic Cemetery. Is his grave marked? I was told by a findagrave volunteer that it was but another member could not find it. Can you?
The Malberg family first came to Aitkin CO, MN in the early 1880's. After 1900, they left for the state of Washington. They came back at times to Minnesota to settle the sale of their farm also when Brita/Breta's mother died, Bessie Nelson.

His parents were Erik Göransson and Margareta Ersdotter, living at Saxen, Torp parish. Erik married on July 23rd, 1876 to Brita Lena Andersdotter (Bessie). Their daughter Greta (Maggie) was born Sept 20th 1876 at Fränsta, Torp parish (in American records it is recorded for a birth record for Maggie Sept 22nd). The family emigrated June 17th, 1882 and left Sweden on a small ship for England on June 30th, 1882. In the passenger list they have the surname Mällberg. They boarded at Liverpool, England on the steamship Abyssinia, Cunard Line built 1870, landing at N.Y. N.Y on July 19th, 1882. You can find history and a picture of ship online. The destination listed for them in the ship records was North Branch, Chisago CO, Minnesota (a small town one half hour north of the Twin Cities). There is one more person traveling on the same ticket, a child named Erik (born 1881) who is 1 years old. In the 1910 census records Bessie said she was the mother of 4 children and three living. In the 1885 MN state census for Isanti, Isanti CO, MN, we found Bessie and daughter Greta (Maggie) alone (Isanti is about 30 minutes north from Twin Cities). No other child is listed. Eric has left for the woods to do lumbering somewhere in Minnesota I'm sure that's why he is not with them on the census. From the passenger ship records this little boy, Eric, made it to America. He did not died on the ship at sea.

He was born Mar 1st, 1866 and was still unmarried by 1900. He died Nov 4th, 1936 Torp parish. Unmarried. The other son, laborer Lars Olof Eriksson, born May 10th, 1854 married Dec 22nd, 1883 to Märta Johanna Söderlund*, born Sept 21st, 1863. Their children: Lars Alfred born Mar 14th, 1883, Märta Adelia born Dec 26th, 1892. (*Märta Johanna Söderlund is from my family tree as well. I have her name and children in my family records. Fränsta is a village in Torp parish, Medelpad, where the church was located. Torp parish covered a large area of land with many small villages in it (many villages). Use http://maps.google.com/ to locate villages (parishes are rarely noted on maps these days, it is more an administrative division). I have been to Fränsta and surrounding areas many times. I lived there for a week in 2006. I know the area well. Do you want to go?
Erick's wife: Brita/Breta/Bessie Helena/Lena (Andersdotter) Malberg-born July 20th, 1853, Fränsta, Torp Parish, Medelpad, Sweden. Her parents were Anders Nilsson and Brita Andersdotter (Bessie Nelson in America). Brita's surname was originally Andersdotter, being name after her father Anders. So her mother and herself had the same surname: Andersdotter, besides the same given name, Brita/Breta/Bessie. The mother, Bessie Nelson, is buried in Aitkin CO, MN and Randy Wall marked her grave.
Brita/Breta died on Apr 29th, 1923, Curlew, Ferry Co, WA. She is buried at the Curlew City Cemetery and her grave is marked. Her sister was Christina Edlund. Christina was married to Randy Wall's great great uncle, Andrew Edlund. Bessie's grave is on findagrave.com under the name, Breta Malberg. Swedish research for John: Johan Fredrik Andersson was born Jan 26th, 1872 in Amnehärad parish, Skaraborgs län, Sweden. The current name of the län is Västra Götaland (several län were merged a few years ago), which is situated in the southwest of Sweden.
John emigrated in 1890. A small ship left Sweden for England on May 23rd, 1890. He listed in these ship records that his final destination was Cadillac (Wexford CO, Michigan). On the east coast of England, where they landed from Sweden, a train would take the emigrants to the west coast to board the large steamships to America, in the harbors there. He boarded on the steamship S. S. Majestic by the White Star Line (built 1890) and arrived on July 3rd, 1890 NY from Liverpool, England, age 18. John was on a brand new ship (luckily it wasn't the Titanic by the White Star Line). This ship is pictured on pages 106 and 107 in Randy Wall's book on his family, Swanson/Nickander story. John died on June 25th, 1956 at Lake Stevens, Snohomish CO, WA.
John/Johan Fredrik's siblings and all children were born at Amnehärad.

2.) Carl Isak Andersson, born Sept 14th, 1859. He emigrated 1885, ship left Apr 17th, to NY from Sweden. We find the record for Carl Anderson, born 1860, arriving in N.Y. on May 4th, 1885 on the ship Republic from Liverpool England. Was this Charles Elmer Anderson in America?
3.) Adam Walfrid Andersson, born Dec 26th, 1864 (not found in 1900 Swedish census or passenger lists).
4.) Maria Charlotta Andersdotter, born Oct 12th, 1868 (still alive and unmarried by 1900).
5. Johan Fredrik Andersson was born Jan 26th, 1872 (John Anderson).
Margarets' name on the marriage license was spelled Melborg. In the 1920 census Maggie is listed under Marqurite and living at Curlew, Ferry Co, WA with family. Maggie died on Sept 26th, 1926 at Curlew, Ferry Co, WA. Both John and Maggie are buried at the Curlew City Cemetery and their graves are marked. Their graves are on findagrave.com on the Internet.
Children all born in Everett: Clarence Frederick Anderson born Mar 26th, 1905, June (Junnete) Margaret Moller born June 19th, 1906, Chester Erick Anderson born Oct. 6th, 1907, Dorothy Bessie McNeese born Jan. 26th, 1911, and Ruby Marjorie Kukull born July 2nd, 1915.
There were family pictures of the Malberg's in my Mormor trunk. Ida (Swanson) Nickander (my grandmother) and Maggie always remained close through out their lives. They were from the same area in Sweden and they were distant cousins. And Maggie's aunt Christina married Ida's uncle, Andrew Edlund and all these families lived side by side in Glory, Nordland Township, Aitkin CO, MN from the 1880's to 1910ca. Also Maggie was in school in the 1880's at Glory, Minnesota with my grandfather, Matt Nickander. They both learned English together at that little one room schoolhouse. Also in the class were the Edlunds.

In the 1910 census he is also living at Cedarhome, Snohomish Co, WA. On July 14th, 1909 he married Ethel Wood at Cedarhome. She was born on July 16th, 1888, Barron, Barron CO, WI and died on July 22nd, 1946 at Everett, Snohomish, WA. Eric and Ethel are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery at Everett and their graves are marked. Children born at Everett: Vesta Margaret Pittman born May 7th, 1910, Cecil Malberg died at birth on March 1912, Cecil Frances Malberg died on Feb. 18th, 1914 age 1, Infant Malberg, died at birth on March 28th, 1916, Leroy Eric Malberg born Sept. 24th, 1918 and Bessie Ruth Wycoff born March 7th, 1923.
3.) Brita (Bessie Malberg) Swartz-born Oct 3rd, 1889, Nordland Township, Aitkin CO, MN. In 1910 she is living with her sister Maggie and family at Cedarhome. In 1920, Bessie and her mother, Bessie, are living in Curlew, Ferry Co. Bessie married on Feb. 5th, 1921 to Hyman (Herman) Swartz at Pierce Co, WA (born March 25th, 1891 Germany and died Sept. 19th, 1971, Everett). Bessie died on Sept. 15th, 1942 at Coeur d' Alene, Kootenai CO, Idaho. No Children.
Herman took very good care of Bessie. She had Rheumatoid Arthritis so bad that she just curled up almost in a fetal position before she passed on. They said that Bessie was bed ridden the last 5 yrs of her life. She is buried at Forest Cemetery at Coeur d' Alene and her grave is marked. The Malberg family lives are recorded in Erick Swanson's diary from 1899 and 1900 back in Minnesota, where the family was living. This diary was published in Randy Wall's book, Nickander/Swanson story. This diary is a recording of the lives of a small community called Glory (at Nordland Township, Aitkin Co, MN) with the focus on its citizens. Mainly all are Swedish. Their everyday lives, food, celebrations and a sad funeral of a little girl. He records the daily temperature and tells of the chores one must perform to carve out a living in this area they are developing. There are hardships they face but they bond together to help each other through the ordeals; good times and hard times.

There is one more person traveling on the same ticket, a child named Erik (born 1881) who is 1 years old. In the 1910 census records Bessie said she was the mother of 4 children and three living. In the 1885 MN state census for Isanti, Isanti CO, MN, we found Bessie and daughter Greta (Maggie) alone (Isanti is about 30 minutes north from Twin Cities). No other child is listed. Eric has left for the woods to do lumbering somewhere in Minnesota I'm sure that's why he is not with them on the census. From the passenger ship records this little boy, Eric, made it to America. He did not died on the ship at sea.

Fränsta is a village in Torp parish, Medelpad, where the church was located. Torp parish covered a large area of land with many small villages in it (many villages). Use http://maps.google.com/ to locate villages (parishes are rarely noted on maps these days, it is more an administrative division). I have been to Fränsta and surrounding areas many times. So her mother and herself had the same surname: Andersdotter, besides the same given name, Brita/Breta/Bessie. The mother, Bessie Nelson, is buried in Aitkin CO, MN and Randy Wall marked her grave.
Brita/Breta died on Apr 29th, 1923, Curlew, Ferry Co, WA. She is buried at the Curlew City Cemetery and her grave is marked. Her sister was Christina Edlund. Swedish research for John: Johan Fredrik Andersson was born Jan 26th, 1872 in Amnehärad parish, Skaraborgs län, Sweden. The current name of the län is Västra Götaland (several län were merged a few years ago), which is situated in the southwest of Sweden.
John emigrated in 1890. A small ship left Sweden for England on May 23rd, 1890. He listed in these ship records that his final destination was Cadillac (Wexford CO, Michigan). On the east coast of England, where they landed from Sweden, a train would take the emigrants to the west coast to board the large steamships to America, in the harbors there. He boarded on the steamship S. S. Majestic by the White Star Line (built 1890) and arrived on July 3rd, 1890 NY from Liverpool, England, age 18. John was on a brand new ship (luckily it wasn't the Titanic by the White Star Line). This ship is pictured on pages 106 and 107 in Randy Wall's book on his family, Swanson/Nickander story. There were family pictures of the Malberg's in my Mormor trunk. Ida (Swanson) Nickander (my grandmother) and Maggie always remained close through out their lives. They were from the same area in Sweden and they were distant cousins. And Maggie's aunt Christina married Ida's uncle, Andrew Edlund and all these families lived side by side in Glory, Nordland Township, Aitkin CO, MN from the 1880's to 1910ca. Also Maggie was in school in the 1880's at Glory, Minnesota with my grandfather, Matt Nickander. They both learned English together at that little one room schoolhouse. Also in the class were the Edlunds.

Eric and Ethel are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery at Everett and their graves are marked. Children born at Everett: Vesta Margaret Pittman born May 7th, 1910, Cecil Malberg died at birth on March 1912, Cecil Frances Malberg died on Feb. 18th, 1914 age 1, Infant Malberg, died at birth on March 28th, 1916, Leroy Eric Malberg born Sept. 24th, 1918 and Bessie Ruth Wycoff born March 7th, 1923.

Bessie died on Sept. 15th, 1942 at Coeur d' Alene, Kootenai CO, Idaho. No Children.
Herman took very good care of Bessie. She had Rheumatoid Arthritis so bad that she just curled up almost in a fetal position before she passed on. They said that Bessie was bed ridden the last 5 yrs of her life. She is buried at Forest Cemetery at Coeur d' Alene and her grave is marked. The Malberg family lives are recorded in Erick Swanson's diary from 1899 and 1900 back in Minnesota, where the family was living. This diary was published in Randy Wall's book, Nickander/Swanson story. This diary is a recording of the lives of a small community called Glory (at Nordland Township, Aitkin Co, MN) with the focus on its citizens. Mainly all are Swedish. Their everyday lives, food, celebrations and a sad funeral of a little girl. He records the daily temperature and tells of the chores one must perform to carve out a living in this area they are developing. There are hardships they face but they bond together to help each other through the ordeals; good times and hard times.

In the 1895 MN state census and the 1900 MN federal census, Eric and family are living at Nordland Township, Aitkin CO, MN (near the town of Glory). In the 1910 census he is living with his daughter, Maggie and husband, John Anderson, at Everett (Cedarhome), Snohomish Co, WA with his wife Bessie and daughter, Bessie. The 1920 federal census has the Malberg family and the Anderson Families living in Ferry County, Curlew dist. of Washington State. The 1930 census of Curlew, Ferry Co, WA, list Eric as head of the household, with his son-in-law John Anderson and two of his children, Chester and Ruby, all living together. Eric lost his wife (Bessie) and John also lost his wife (Eric's daughter Maggie) in the 1920's.
Eric died on Aug 27th, 1933, Republic, Ferry CO, WA at a county home (nursing home). On his death certificate, he's listed as E. P. Melberg (not Malberg). Eric Melberg is buried at the Republic Cemetery. Is his grave marked? I was told by a findagrave volunteer that it was but another member could not find it. Can you?
