Belle was very active in civic affairs. She was an excellent mother and president of the PTA. Her financial common sense kept her family afloat during the lean days of the Great Depression. The family home on C Street in Broderick belonged to her, and she had it built in the early 1920's, as well as the adjoining Senator Garage that she wisely reserved as an extra source of income. Eventually, she added her daughter Dorothy to the property deed, assuring the home and gas station would stay in the family.

Although her marriage was often frustrating, and her husband sometimes volatile, Belle was faithful. She and Bill had known each other since childhood, and her love for him was steadfast. Belle understood him, forgave his mood swings, forgave his restlessness, forgave his weakness for drink and the repercussions of his abuse of drink. She stood by him and never gave up on him.

Belle died quite suddenly one night, apparently of cardiac arrest, on her living room sofa. Her family, who were there at that moment, said there was no warning, she simply "went to sleep."
