She was always interested in Church. This great faith started when she first taught a Sunday School class at the age of 12 years, two years after she had joined the Methodist Church in Bellwood. She was Supt. Of the same Sunday School when she was 20. She taught Sunday School in Albuquerque New Mexico and held with a Junior Church. September 2, 1928, Bessie married Cecil M. Bernard at Rising City, Nebr. Following their wedding they left for their new home in Albuquerque where Mr. Bernard was Boys Wordk Secretary of the YMCA for five years. In 1933 they moved to Columbus, Neb. Still working with the YMCA, her husband then General Secretary. In the fall of 1936 Mr. & Mrs. Bernard moved to Kamuela, Hawaii, T.H. and later to Hilo, Hawaii, T.H. where the children were born to her and following their birth she lived only to see that her children should have a fine academic education and one in music. She, herself, was accomplished in both.

Betty had been active in Y.W.C.A. and Girl Scout work all her life While in Albuquerque she had sponsored several Girl Reserve groups in the Mission Schools near there. In Hawaii she organized and was Girl Scout leader of the troop on the famous Parker Ranch and which was sponsored by the Ranch She was always interested in helping children, even while afflicted with cancer she continued to teach her own and children in the neighborhood piano.

Bessie died without fear of death, but with only concern about those she loved so much and who would be left so young.
