Viola H. "Snookie" (Childress) Hicks Brooks, 93, went to be with the Lord Sunday morning, Sept. 5, 2010. She died peacefully in her sleep.

She was born, Aug. 2, 1917 in Pulaski, Va., the daughter of John and Minnie (Craig) Childress and spent her early years in McDowell County, W.Va., prior to moving to Muncie in 1942.

Mrs. Brooks operated a wig shop and square dance apparel store for many years and in 1974 she joined a bluegrass band and played the upright bass.

She was a member of the Lamplighters Square Dance Club, Noblesville, and the Appalachia Sounds Bluegrass Band, Muncie. For the past several years, she loved performing at the local Cop Shop and several area bluegrass festivals. People that went to see her perform got to know her as "Vi Brooks".

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Everett Leo Brooks, Muncie; two sons, Malcolm E. (wife, Pam) Hicks, Anderson, and John D. (wife, Jill) Hicks, Muncie; a stepdaughter, Jaretta (husband, Bob) Hertle, Muncie; a daughter-in-law, Janice Hicks, Bedford; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leonard Childress; a sister, Mildred Lucash; a son, Robert L. Hicks; and a stepson, Ronald Brooks.
