In the 1870 Census John and Sarah along with daughter Lydia and son Robert E. lived in Washington, Indiana and his occupation was a wagon maker. The family may have lived a short time in Illinois where their fourth daughter Almeda Jane was born in 1873. In 1878 the family moved to Kansas, this according to the obituary of his daughter Martha Cornelia Austin-Heywood. In the 1880 census John was a farmer and the family was living in Gypsum, Salina, Kansas and by 1885 Kansas census they were living Culver,Kansas. They continue to farm. In 1910 John is not working and three of the sons are living with them, Norval, Lloyd and Raymond. None of the sons are farming all working in retail stores

John Malix Austin
Mr. John Malix Austin was born in Elizabeth. Indiana, April 16, 1841, and died at his home in Culver, Kansas, January 7, 1918, aged 78 years, 8 months, 21 days.His parents were natives of England. Brother Austin was converted when a young man and united with the M. E. Church and at one time had a license to preach. After moving to Kansas, he united with the United Brethren in Christ at Pleasant Hill, 36 years ago; and was there S. S. Superintendent for 20 years. Since then, he has been a member in good standing, faithful as an officer, in the Church, and consecrated to his Lord's work, until the call came, "Come up higher." He was married to Sarah J. Green, at Canton Indiana, November 8, 1866. To this union, were born 12 children; -7 boys and 5 girls; two of whom have preceded him to the Other World Lawrence S. Austin died March 15, 1888, aged 15 months; Minnie May Austin Bean, died February 9, 1915, aged 43 years, 10 months, and 10 days. He leaves 10 children and a loving companion to struggle on with the great battle of Life. He left to them a great legacy of Christian character. The children all have homes of their own, and were present at the funeral services. He has 28 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He leaves many friends in the Church of the United Brethren, and all Christian people, and in the business world. He was a soldier, in the Rebellion, for the Union, belonging to Co. M. of the 53rd Volunteer Infantry of Indiana. He was also a soldier in the Volunteer Army of the Lord.
