OBITUARY :
C. MELVIN BAUMGARDNER, 89, of 11307 Baumgardner Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born March 17, 1918, in Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles Russell and Alice M. Bonebrake Baumgardner.

He attended Rouzerville (Pa.) schools.

He owned and operated C. R. Baumgardner & Sons Excavating, Waynesboro, until his retirement in the early 1980s.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific Theater.

He was a member of Rouzerville Church of the Brethren.

He was a member of Acacia Lodge 586 Free & Accepted Masons, Waynesboro, Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Shriner's, Franklin County Shrine Club, BPO, all of Waynesboro, and Rouzerville Lions Club, where he held various offices, including president and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.

He also served on the board of directors for Fairfield (Pa.) National Bank.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret L. Ashbaugh Baumgardner; two daughters, Darlene K. Greenawalt and Linda L. Barkdoll, both of Waynesboro; one son, John R. Baumgardner of Waynesboro; five grandchildren; and one-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Mitchell R. Baumgardner.

Services will be private. The Rev. Dr. Harold W. Walton will officiate. Burial will be Antietam Cemetery, Waynesboro.

It was his request to have no public viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to Rouzerville Lions Club, c/o James Davis, 318 Fairmount Ave., Waynesboro, PA 17268.

Arrangements are by Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
