Born Maria Petronila Boronda, a descendant of many early Californian settlers and rancheros in the Monterey area, she was only 12 when her mother died. Very dear to my grandmother, Refugio, then 17 year old, the sisters helped raise her until Petra's marriage. Considered a great beauty of her time, she sadly died in childbirth the next year, age 17.

The June 18, 1900 Census San Diego lists four Boronda sisters in the rented farm household of
Alexander Jaussaud/head of household/M/43/France/ farmer/ 23 years in US
Felicida {Boronda} Jaussaud/wife/F/23/California, married November 19, 1900,
His children {with first wife}:
Frank Jaussaud, 11, California
Jules Jaussaud, 9, Mexico
Alexander Jaussaud, 7, Mexico
Charles Jaussaud, 6, Mexico
Alice Jaussaud, 2, Mexico

Sisters-in-law, California born, able to read, write and speak English {Felicity's sisters}
Refuge Barondo, 20, b. June, 1879
Mary C Barondo, 16, b. May 1884 [Petra}
Josephine Barondo, 12, b. September, 1887

They might have been there to celebrate "Hattie's" wedding with her, or, as her unmarried sisters, help with the five young children of the widower Alexander.

Jules was a cousin of Alexander, born April 17, 1873 in France, who met and wed young Petra, then lost her in this 16 month window. Another sad chapter unfolded as he remarried a woman from Spain named Aurora and lost their daughter, Juliette Jaussaud, at age 18.

The sadness of her death lingered decades, her story told many times by my dad, having heard it many times from his mother. Refugio seemed to break ranks afterwards with these traditional teen weddings, moving among her extended family and working in several California cities, finally marrying at age 31.
Rest in peace, my lovely Aunt Petra.
