WEAVERVILLE – Helen Kathleen "Kay" Allen Howell, age 88, of Merrimon Ave., died Saturday, September 11, 2010.

Mrs. Howell was born November 22, 1921, in Bedford County, Virginia, and had been a resident of Buncombe County for over 60 years. She attended Radford College in Radford, VA, and graduated from Lewis Gale Hospital in Roanoke, VA, as a registered nurse. Kay was a veteran of World War II, having served as a 2nd Lt. registered nurse in the Army Air Force, based in Greensboro, and Yale University Hospital in Connecticut. She was a member of Weaverville United Methodist Church. She was an active charter member of Grace Waugh Circle, serving in several offices. She worked on various committees and was instrumental in organizing their visitation program. She continued to serve until she became unable to participate. She was a member of the Women's Society and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 891.

Kay was the daughter of the late Jacob Walton and Mary Jones Allen. She was wife of the late Harry Graden Howell who died in 2004. Also preceding her in death were her son, Terry Lee Howell; a brother, John W. Allen who was killed in action in France during World War II; sister, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Welch and an infant brother, Vincent Allen.

Surviving are her son, Roger A. Howell of New York City; daughter, Martha C. Howell Burnette and her husband Van of Black Mountain; and grandson Grayson Cain Howell of New York City.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, September 15, 2010 in Weaverville United Methodist Church, with Reverends Linda Kelly and Buddy Corbin officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 5483 Mars Hill Memorial Team.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, where the body will remain until placed in the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
