John Hargrave was among the first emigrants to take the Hastings Cutoff to California. In August of 1846, the first group, the Harlan-Young Party, arrived in the Tooele Valley, Utah. Mr. Hargrave died of pneumonia on August 11 and was buried the next day.

Two weeks later, when the Donner-Reed Party reached the valley, Luke Halloran died of consumption and was laid to rest next to John Hargrave.

The exact locations of the graves may never be known, but a panel was erected to commemorate John Hargrave and Luke Halloran as the first emigrants to be buried in Utah soil.
