Charles McClung was a surveyor, lawyer, merchant and county official. He
laid out the town of Knoxville. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of
Blount College, now the University of Tennessee. He also served as clerk of
the Knox County Court from 1792 until 1834.

In memory of Col. Charles McClung. A native of Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania and a resident of Knox County, Tennessee. Born May 13, 1761 and
died August 9, 1835 on his eighteenth visit to the Harrodsburg Springs,
Kentucky. Removed from the private burying ground of Dr. Graham at
Harrodsburg, Kentucky Dec. 10, 1904 by his Great-Grandson Lee McClung and
reinterred here.
