Grandpa Abernathy died in Concord but was a resident of China Grove where he worked at Cannon Mills for many years. We used to wait up for him when he worked second shift at the mill, one block from his house. When the 11:00 whistle would go off we would run to meet him as he came strolling through the gate swinging his black lunch box. Grandpa loved watching "Days of Our Lives" before he went to work. He also loved comic books, his bird Petey, and his poodle Mimi.

He and wife Vera raised four sons and a daughter on the China Grove Mill Hill, working opposite shifts. They attended South China Grove Baptist Church, and Avery was a Boy Scout Leader. He snored like a freight train but denied it until his dying day! He also loved making Red-Eye Gravy which is why family used to say, "Red-Eye Gravy, Get the Recipe from Avery"!

At the age of 60 Grandpa quit smoking cold turkey. A week later he told his daughter that he quit a week ago and his wife Vera hadn't even noticed. The same day Vera told my Mom, "Can you believe your father hasn't had a cigarette in a week?"
