George E. Edwards, Jr. was the son of Col. George Edwards, Sr. (1812-1899) who was born in Kentucky and died in Macon County, Missouri; and Frances Ann (Vaughn) Edwards (1825-1918) who was born in Howard County, Missouri and died in Macon County, Missouri.

George E. Edwards, Jr. was ordained as a Primitive Baptist minister in 1885 at the age of 29. Ministers in this faith are referred to as Elders as "it is against the church principles to speak of their ministers as Reverend, holding that the term occurs but once in the Bible and then in reference to Jehovah."

On December 4, 1873, in Macon County, Missouri, Elder Edwards was married to Irene Jane Gross (1854-1939) and they had three known children:

Willie died at the age of 1; Odie died at the age of 19; and only their daughter Jessie lived into adulthood.

Between 1900 and 1905, Elder Edwards was divorced from Irene. She continued to live in Kirksville, Missouri, and took in boarders. She died in 1939 and is buried at Steele Cemetery in Macon County where her children Willie, Odie, and Jessie are buried.

On July 19, 1905, Elder Edwards married Katie E. Moss in Shelby County, Missouri. They had one known daughter:

Elder Edwards died in 1933 (Missouri Death Certificate 13882) and was buried at Chariton Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Macon County, Missouri. His second wife, Katie, spent the last 3 years of her life in the Missouri State Mental Hospital #2 in St. Joseph, Missouri, where she died in 1946. She is also buried at Chariton Church Cemetery.
