"Double Murder and Suicide at Dayton. In April 1881 one of the most dastardly murders in the history of Butte County was committed near Dayton. Harry Swearingen killed his wife, Mrs. Ella Swearingen, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. A.M. Boucher, upon Mrs. Boucher's ranch. Mrs. Swearingen was but seventeen years old, and had separated from her husband. He was attempting to induce her to return to him; and when she refused, he shot and killed her, killed the mother, and then commited suicide by shooting himself."
