Abraham was taken prisoner at Chickamauga and confined in Andersonville, Libby, Belle Isle and Florence prisons. He was incarcerated for seventeen months and five days. After returning home, he lost an arm from the effect of scurvy
Abraham married Amy A. Wright on December 24, 1867 in Erie, Monroe County, Michigan. He had children Willard, Charles, Edward and Bertha. He was the son of Joshua Vance and Mary Van Camp Smith. His paternal grandfather was also named Joshua Smith and came from Rhode Island.
