Joshua lived in Troy Township, Wood County. He married Mary Van Camp on February 22, 1842 in Wood County, and had children Corwin, Abraham, Joshua, Charles, Huldah, Millard, and Walter.
He is the son of Joshua and Huldah Alger Smith of Rhode Island and New York who came to Perrysburg, Ohio in 1826. The two had met and married in New York where Huldah had been born near Albany. Joshua had siblings Lucy (m. Julius Blinn), Maria (died in infancy), John Lee (died of cholera in the 1854 epidemic), Jacob (who enlisted in the 72nd OVI and was accidently killed by a falling tree limb in January 1865), Elizabeth (died in 1866), and Clarissa (m. Samuel Shook).
Joshua V. farmed in the summer and bought furs in the winter. He also engaged in brick-making. He was a Republican, and before that, a Whig, voting for William Henry Harrison. Joshua was a trustee, a constable, and a member of the United Brethren Church at Lemoyne, Ohio.
