Charles Rudolph "Carl" Kuhnert immigrated to the United States around 1898 from Suhl, Thuringen, Germany along with his wife Antonia Weiss. They originally lived in Boston where their daughter, Gertrude was born in 1903 and they made the journey across country to settle in San Francisco. Their daughter, Florence, was born there in February 1906, just before the Great Earthquake. Carl was a barber by trade and the family eventually settled in San Diego where they raised their daughters and lived for many years. Antonie passed away and Carl married a 2nd time to Ella Babcock Phillips and they moved to the Los Angeles area around 1935.
