Obituary for Joseph Aguanno
Joseph Aguanno, age 93, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010.
He was born on June 23, 1917, the fourth of six children to Rosario and Vita (Costa) Aguanno. Joseph was born and raised in New York City, N.Y., to parents who immigrated in 1913 from Sicily. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, proudly serving as a sergeant in Italy during World War II. While stationed at Truax Field in Madison, Joseph met Grace Atkins. They were united in marriage on July, 1, 1946. Together they started their married lives in New York City. As a young accomplished trumpet player in the 1950's and 60's, Joe played with many signature musicians and entertainers. His career began with Bunny Berigan Band , then eventually was the band leader for the Copa Cabana Club in New York City. There they played with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Louis Armstrong, Dea Martin and Tony Bennett, just to name a few. Joseph and Grace returned to Madison, to raise their son in 1964. He continued to follow his love for music and played at many local events in Madison.
He is survived by his son, Joseph "Jody" Aguanno of Chicago, Ill; sister Domenica Sommo of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and further survived by many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace, on June 27, 2010; sisters, Ann and Mary; brothers, Dan and Tony.
Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME , 5203 Monona Dr., from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010. A private burial service will be held at Spring Prairie Hauge Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in Joseph's name to the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisc., 2802 Dairy Dr., Madison, WI 53718.
