Appointed first Postmaster General of the United States in 1789 by George Washington. Osgood's NYC home became, at his insistence, the first executive mansion. Osgood was also the first president of the City Bank of New York, forerunner of today's Citigroup.

Green-Wood Cemetery
Section 49, Lot 6634.
The SAMUEL OSGOOD FAMILY VAULT seen from across Southwood Avenue. In June of 1856, numerous members of the Osgood family were moved to this vault from previous graves in Manhattan when the Brick Presbyterian Church sold its property, including its graveyard, to the fledgling New York Times.
