Civil War Union Brigadier General. He began his military career being commissioned directly into the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant of Dragoons on October 13, 1837. For gallantry at Buena Vista in the Mexican War he was promoted Major and in 1849, he transferred from line duty to the staff of the Quartermaster Department. During the Civil War, he was promoted Brigadier General in charge of the depot for the Quartermaster Department and oversaw the procurement of the equipment needed for the transportation of an Army for the coarse of the entire war. For diligent and faithful service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers. After the war, he was appointed Assistant Quartermaster General of the Army and in 1882, he was appointed Quartermaster General of the Army. He retired that same year.
