Civil War Union Brigadier General. He was a Engineer Professor teaching at West Point in 1861, when he enlisted to serve the Union in the Civil War. Commissioned Colonel of the 10th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment in August 1862, he was assigned to the engineering operations of the Army of the Potomac. In 1863, he led the 10th Massachusetts in actions at Williamsport, Fredericksburg, Mary Heights, Salem, Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania and Cold Harbor. He was promoted to Brigadier General of US Volunteers in September 1868 and resigned in June 1864, due to impaired health. After the war, he returned to his professorship at Harvard, authoring a number of technical and scientific articles.
