Early Newfane, Vermont Settler

Artemus/Artemas Bruce was the son of Abijah and Mary (Woods) Bruce and grandson of Roger and Elizabeth (Forbush) Bruce and Isaac and Mary (Maynard) Woods. His Bruce lineage is Artemus-4, Abijah-3, Roger-2, Thomas-1 Bruce. It is possible that Thomas-1 is a typical English Puritan immigrant. It has also been suggested that he was a Scottish prisoner-of-war that was sent to America by Cromwell to purge Scotland of dissidents.

Artemus/Artemas married Mary Latiny on 20 May 1756. They had nine children: Asa, Elijah, Ephraim, Lavina, Preserved, Abigail, Mary Polly, Mary, and Mansfield.

He was born in Westborough, Worcester, Massachusetts 20 Dec 1728 and removed to Newfane, Vermont approximately 1776, where he and his wife lived out their days. (Note that Westborough was formed from Marlborough in 1717.)

Revolutionary War Service. There is Revolutionary War service attributed to an Ephraim Bruce of both Shrewsbury and Newfane, Vermont. It is likely this service is that of Artemus' nephew, son of his brother Ephraim. This Ephraim would have been 48 at the onset of the war. The nephew was 19 in 1770.
