Carl was the son of Jacob and Rose Grams Cornelius. Carl worked on his Uncle John Grams farm near Minden, Nebraska before taking a job with the Union Pacific Railroad, from which he retired.
Carl was close to his younger brother Leo, who passed away tragically in 1917 while undergoing routine surgery preparing for naval duty in World War I. The 2 brothers had worked together for UPPR.
