Bill Grieb was a longtime resident of Pacific Palisades, CA. He died at 68 of lung cancer. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry and Mathematics from Roanoke College in VA, and a Master's Degree in Chemistry from George Washington University. His career started at the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies where he discovered his talent for getting information into and answers out of computers. He moved to CA to work for System Development Corporation, a pioneer in electronic scientific data management. He realized the need for a bridge between people who made computers function (programmers) and those who wanted computers to do work. Independent with a fierce entrepreneurial fever, he started System Interface Consultants to fill that need. He became a consultant before most people knew what one was. His projects ran the gamut; developing one of the first personal computers, safety engineering, owning and running an aerospace machine shop and the Palisades Letter Shop. He was also author and co-author of more than a half a dozen books, his last, "A Brief History of Life; From the Primordial Ooze to Genetically Engineered Species" is being prepared for publication by his wife and daughter. He was extremely active and involved in his communities: a lifetime member of American Association for the Advancement of Science; past president of American Society of Safety Engineers, Los Angeles Chapter; a Rotarian; a member of: the Gemological Society,; Southern California Killi Fish Group; Palisades Library Association; Theater Palisades; and the Palisades Americanism Parade Association among many others. He was a gregarious and outgoing person, always one to be at the center of any social event. He was honored as "Citizen of the Year" by the Palisadian-Post for organizing a year long 75th anniversary celebration for the city. His involvement in community theater included numerous performances in musicals and plays, in addition to writing and performing a one man show, "The Apostles". Memorial services were held 22 Nov 2006 at Community United Methodist Church, Pacific Palisades. Bill Grieb Jr. was survived by: his mother Virginia; sister Elizabeth Yancey, wife of Henry; brother Robert, husband of Dorothy; his wife, Sylvia; daughter Sybil; and his two sons by his first wife, Carrie Burchard: William III, husband of Stacy and Robert, husband of Brenda, father of Carly.
