VIRGIL DONALD HESS, 91, of 1754 Lexington Avenue, died Tuesday, March 26, 1996, at MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital after a short illness.

He was born August 27, 1904, in Shelby to George and Gertrude Newcomer Hess and was a lifelong resident of Richland County.

A 1924 graduate of Butler High School, Mr. Hess was a well-known area historian. Retired in the early 1970's as curator of history at Ashland University and previously had worked as a real estate and insurance agent. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Helen G. Hitchman Hess, whom he married February 22, 1928; a son and daughter-in-law, Al and Tootsie Hess of Mansfield; a grandson, Alfred Hess of Tampa, Florida; and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Donald E. Hess on February 12, 1986; two brothers and two sisters.

The will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Bellville Cemetery by the Rev. Walter B. Orr.

Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is in charge or arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church.

MANSFIELD- VIRGIL HESS, a well-known authority on Richland County's history, died Tuesday evening. He was 91.

Hess loved sharing stories about local lore and was interviewed about historical topics by countless students from grade school to college age. He had been a frequent guest on local radio stations.

A native of Shelby, he was a 1924 graduate of Butler High School and was formerly curator of historical materials and an instructor at Ashland University.

Hess prepared and dedicated several local historical markers, including one in the city building in honor of the late Mayor Charles Scott and one in front of the First Methodist United Church on the square. He compiled two historical books for the Mansfield Board of Realtors.

Hess served as president of the Mansfield Board of Realtors Associate Division. He had been vice president for the Richland County Historical Society and historian for the First Methodist Church and Realtors Board.
