Civil War Union Brevet Major General, US Congressman. From 1846 to 1849, he was secretary to the commissioners sent by President Polk to treaty with the Indians on the Texas frontier. At the beginning of the Civil War, he entered the U S volunteer service and was commissioned a Major in the 1st West Virginia Infantry. He was promoted Colonel of the 9th West Virginia Infantry, in September 1862 and commanded the 2nd Division of the Army of West Virginia in 1863. In 1864, he was promoted Brigadier General in command of the 1st Division of the 8th Army Corps and was wounded in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. For distinguished service, he
was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was the West Virginia Adjutant General and a member of the State Senate, 1867 to 1869. In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress, serving until 1871.
