Reburial services were held late Wednesday for World War II hero Walter M. Manly, III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Manly, who was killed in action in France on November 9, 1944. The body arrived by train Wednesday. An honor guard composed of the local American Legion post, and a host of relatives and friends accompanied the body to the city cemetery where graveside services were conducted by Reverend Jesse G. Cooke. The Legion then took over for a military service with taps sounding as twilight began to wane. Walter Manly III was born in Cotulla on April 30, 1923, he was graduated from the local high school in 1940 as valedictorian. He continued his studies at the University of Texas, receiving his degree in 1943 as an honor graduate and member of Phi Beta Kappa, highest scholastic fraternity. A memorial fund was established in the rare books collection of the University in 1945 in his memory, from which several books have recently been published. Entering the Army Reserves while in the University in December, 1942, he was called into service in March 1943. After receiving basic training at Camp Barkley he was transferred to Harvard University, where he received six months instruction in the Japanese language.
