Ernest joined the Army with his older brother Frank on 24 February 1955 when he was 17 years old. He was at Fort Dix, NJ for basic training and was assigned to Company M, 369th Infantry Regiment. In September of 1955, Ernest was with the 760th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery A, as a cannoneer and was stationed in Barmstadt, Germany. In January of 1957, he was back in the States at Fort Still, OK where his unit received the 18th Field Artillery Battery of the Month award; Ernest was a mechanic at this time. He was promoted to specialist third class at Fort Still that February when he was still with the 760th and was a supply clerk in Battery A while at Fort Still. He was discharged from the Army on 21 February 1958.

Ernest enlisted in the Army for a second term of service on 27 November 1961. He was at Fort Dix in December of 1961 for eight weeks of basic training. He was then stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas in 1962. From there he went to Germany, where he served for three years (1962-1965) before being assigned to Vietnam. He was in Vietnam by May of 1966, serving as private, first class. He was promoted to sergeant by August 1968. He was discharged on 4 April 1969 after seven years and five months of service.
